The Winter Road Plan operation will be active from 1 November to 30 April

November 21, 2023

It will also guarantee the safety and maintenance in adequate conditions of the toll road network.

Bizkaia Provincial Council's winter road plan will be launched again this year between 1 November and 30 April to deal with possible adverse conditions. The operation is made up of a total of 431 professionals, 90 snow ploughs and six weather stations located at significant points of the network, providing updated and permanent information to the control centres.

The Winter Road Plan contemplates four traffic condition levels, depending on the snow and ice present on the road. In each of these four situations, speed limits, traffic restrictions or the compulsory use of snow chains or special tyres are established. Similarly, the Winter Road Plan establishes three priority levels for cleaning the road. Thus, Level 1 establishes a permanent service to ensure traffic flow on the main roads and motorways, at hospital entrances and infrastructures such as the airport or the Port of Bilbao.

The winter road plan uses resources belonging to Bizkaia Provincial Council, such as the Malmasin control centre, the Bizkaia fire brigade, Interbiak and provincial council staff. Likewise, for its adequate implementation it is necessary to collaborate with all of Bizkaia’s municipal councils and with the Basque Government.
